Stylish and unique, with the classic lustre of pearls. Mother-of-pearl embedded within walls of silver, the Cartwheel Pearl Tungsten ring.

Mother-of-pearl was used throughout the centuries for its beauty, smooth and silky texture as well as its creamy white colour. Scientists discovered a plaque dating from Mesopotamian times, 2500BC, with mother-of-pearl inlays. The ancient Egyptians, as well as the Cinese during the Ming dynasty used this gem for its multicoloured iridescence and distinct beauty.

Nacre, a composite material, is produced by the shells of mollusks, like abalone, freshwater mussels and pearl oysters to line the inner shell for protection against parasites and irritants. This lining is called mother-of-pearl. Pearls, on the other hand, are formed  when an irritant gets trapped inside the mollusk shell, cradled within the lining of mother-of-pearl. The shell produces layers and layers of nacre to coat this irritant until it develops into a pearl over a couple of years.

The distinctive multicolored iridescent lustre of mother-of-pearl is caused by the way light interacts and reflects on the layers of nacre on the shell. Mother-of-pearl is mostly opaque to translucent in appearance and may have colour varieties like white, cream, off-white, gray, silver, black, blue, green and red.
